When New England Biolabs® built its headquarters in Ipswich, MA, USA, the main laboratory's footprint was designed to preserve four pre-existing 200-year old copper beech trees. In fact, every decision made in the building of NEB’s facilities was to preserve the natural splendor of the campus. Over 35 years ago, before environmental causes were a concern for most organizations, NEB® was one of the first companies to establish a Styrofoam® shipping box recycling program. We believe that all living things and natural resources should be respected and conserved.
We believe it is important to reach out to our customers, to learn from you, and to be reinvigorated by your commitment to environmental conservation. We are thus recognizing individuals within the scientific community who are committed to promoting a more sustainable world.
Thoughts from 2014 Passion in Science Award Winners
I am interested [in being an] environmentalist because I see the environment where I live, where the environment is polluted by pollution; by water pollution; by waste, excessive waste generation around my home. So when I did my graduate study I think…what I can do in my research to contribute to the society.
I have always been uncomfortable with the large volume of trash I generate while carrying out my research. This project has allowed me to reverse some of the environmental damage my profession creates, while also inspiring undergraduates to look at waste streams as a potential asset.
